Penzion Ljubljana
Ljubljana Penzion Explanation
The word Penzion is used differently by different nationalities so before we give you our recommendation of Penzions in Ljubljana we need to define what the word Penzion/Pension actually means. The most concise description comes from the Macmillan Dictionary who describes it as “a small and fairly cheap hotel in France and some other European countries” [source: www.macmillandictionary.com ]
The Free Dictionary.com has a more detailed explanation of a Penzion:
1. A boarding house or small hotel in Europe: “A pension had somewhat less to offer than a hotel; it was always smaller, and never elegant; it sometimes offered breakfast, and sometimes not” (John Irving).
2. Accommodations or the payment for accommodations, especially at a boarding house or small hotel in Europe.
3. Room and board.

The Ljubljana Penzion
The selection below is based on these descriptions and we have chosen three penzions with the most character and less ‘hotel feeling’. In Slovenia they are often also called Guest houses or Gostilna even though the latter mostly offer food. The pensions in Slovenia are generally very good value for money, connected with a good restaurant but they also have very good quality accommodation.

Penzion Pod Lipo
This 200 years old building in the Ljubljana centre also hosts a much loved Slovene food restaurant in Ljubljana with a leafy court yard outside. Many locals come here for lunch or a drink in the evening which is one of the best signs of quality for a Penzion. In the middle of the yard you find an old lime tree which is believed to have been planted in 1626 and the name Pod Lipo means just ‘Under the Lime Tree’.
This Ljubljana Penzion offers mainly double rooms and triple rooms, all with private bathrooms. All rooms have a computer with internet access and you also have a shared kitchen where you can cook your own food or enjoy the extensive range of free tea. This Ljubljana Penzion also have a large terrace where you can relax or escape for a cigarette break. The current price for a double room is €65 per room per night and a triple room used by 3 people costs €125 per room per night. You can also higher the bigger ‘triple rooms’ which can hosts up to 5 people with an additional bed for a slightly higher fee.
Breakfast is only €3.50 extra.

Stari Tišler
This central Ljubljana Penzion has a history that goes back around 100 years ago when this was the place which the coachmen rested on their way through Ljubljana. For many years, Stari Tišler was only known for its restaurant which survived long after the coachmen had left, partly because it’s close location to the Ljubljana’s main railway station. The restaurant is now a protected Ljubljana monument and it is well known to the locals. The Penzion is now re-opened and the rooms are simple but clean. One of the most memorable parts of its interiors is the stunning staircase which take you up to the rooms.
Portal Guesthouse
Located a short bus ride outside of the Ljubljana centre, this Ljubljana Penzion is also a well known restaurant but not with the traditional Slovene food. The locally famous restaurant serves Balkan food, specialising in Leskovac cuisine which are meat dishes grilled exclusively on real charcoal. Here you find some of the best cevapcici and pleskavicas in Ljubljana but also more internationally know dishes with pasta or fresh fish.
The penzion’s rooms are furnished in an Alpine style and they offer a peaceful stay with an overview of the river. It’s a great place for both business or families and they can cater for rooms with up to five beds. All rooms are well equipped with a desk, phones, internet, fridges and en-suite bathroom. The price for a room with ‘Bed & Breakfast’ costs from €55 up to €120 for a room for 4 guests.
